If there’s one day of the year where you should be made to feel like a celebrity, or in Erika’s case, royalty, it’s your birthday. And so, with the birthday girl turning 18 this year, she had managed to convince her parents to allow her to celebrate in style – with a medieval-themed party, where the guests were asked to wear period-style costumes, and Hog Roast Nyland was invited along to serve our most traditional banquet: the Classic Hog Roast Menu.
After weeks of planning and preparing for the big day, the party finally went ahead on Friday night, and to fit the theme, Erika’s parents had rented out a real castle for the evening, along with hiring a court jester for entertainment, which added to the historic vibe the birthday girl had been so desperate to create. They had even arranged a cardboard stockade photo prop for the guests to take funny group pictures, as well as a hobby horse jousting competition.
In charge of catering for the unusual event was Hog Roast Nyland’s catering manager and head chef, Alistair, who had arrived on-site early that afternoon to ensure the pig had enough time to cook before the guests sat down to eat.
The entire meal, which consisted of a whole spit-roasted pig, homemade sage and onion stuffing, professionally served crackling and applesauce, with sides of farm-fresh salad and coleslaw, took around five hours in total to prepare, the last hour of which the guests were all present for. Watching the pig as it slowly rotated over real flames was a form of entertainment in itself, and as the food neared completion, the anticipation among the guests began to build.
As the birthday girl, Erika, who was dressed in an embellished renaissance gown, was the first to receive a plateful of the juicy meat and accompanying sides, and like the guests who collected their plates soon after her, she was amazed by the outstanding quality of the food! To finish the dining experience, Hog Roast Nyland served slices of Erika’s birthday cake, which they dressed in fresh berries and cream for extra flavour.
