From ancient history to the weird and wonderful, this is our home, this is Somerset. When most people think of Somerset they think of the famous Glastonbury festival, cider and cricket… but our county has so much more to offer. Such as the longest preserved steam railway in the whole of the UK, it gloriously stretches out for 20 miles running from Bishop’s Lydeard to Minehead. We’re also a county of firsts, Taunton was the first town to be permanently lit by electric street lighting in 1881, Shepton Mallet was home to the first jail and homed countless inmates over 400 years and we first created ten pin bowling as a modification of Somerset skittles! We are made up of five districts, and here at Hog Roast Sherborne we’ll travel from Mendip and Sedgemoor all the way down to Taunton Deane.
Throughout these five districts we created a lot of sweet treats, including Whortleberry Jam made from the wild blueberries found across Exmoor and Dartmoor. Somerset apple cake is also very famous with the likes of Mary Berry (born in Somerset) creating her own, served warm with ice cream or dusted lightly with icing sugar and how could we forget our sweet cider, in which there are 32 farms based in Somerset that are devoted to the production of cider! Hog Roast Sherborne’s menus also include a great variety of desserts, perfect for any event!
More than 170,000 people attend Glastonbury each year, making it the UK’s most famous festival and has seen some of the world’s largest performers e.g. Ed Sheeran, Coldplay, Kayne West and Oasis. Glastonbury isn’t the only festival we home, you can experience anything from the Somerset Gin Festival in Yeovil to the National Trust Top of the Gorge Festival in Cheddar. If festivals aren’t your cup of tea, we also have a wide choice of attractions, whether it be riding the slides at Brean Splash Water Park, flying owls at Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm in Bristol or caving in the Wookey Hole in Lower Milton, there’s something for everyone.
There are more than 400 villages in Somerset including some rather funnily named towns, e.g. Beardly Batch, Huish Episcopi, Preston Plucknett, Vobster and Compton Pauncefoot. Our catering team at Hog Roast Sherborne will happily travel to each town on the list above and even the funnily named towns. If you still can’t see your town, just sent us an email or call us and we’ll make sure we can serve our delicious catering to you.
